Research tells us that spelling is a developmental process and that is how we I will be approaching your students spelling instruction. Word Study is not just about spelling but phonics, vocabulary, and the study of words in context. I will start by assessing each students with a spelling test and scoring it based on certain spelling features. This will allow me to place your student into a specific spelling group. You may notice your child’s words are quite different from last year as well as the activities. Word Study allows students to physically sort words by their feature, manipulate the words with activities, search for a feature in literature, and interact with words like they never have before. Please work with your students at home not just by memorizing the actual word but discussing the feature. Ask your child what group they are in to match with the correct spelling list. In addition, students will have 5 high frequency words each week.
