HARMON Binder

Greetings!

********************************************************************

Sooooo, what in the world is a H.A.R.M.O.N Notebook?

Having All Required Materials Organized Neatly

The Harmon Notebook is a three ring binder that your child will use every day. The purpose is to aid in the development of organizational skills and foster responsibility. Fifth grade is a transitional year, and it is important to keep the lines of communication between home and school open. This book is a way of helping your child become accountable for those communications. The focus is to eliminate lost notes, money, calendars, newsletters, and homework, as well as keep parents and students informed of important events and academic progress.

Here’s what you’ll find inside:

Money Pouch From time to time you may need to send money to school for
book club orders, lunch, field trips, etc. Please use the zippered pouch to send money to

school. Please do not use this pouch for school supplies as it is not durable enough for
everyday use. This pouch will also house students’ weekly word study words.

Character Card This card will serve as a means of communication between parents, teachers, and especially students. Please look at this card every night and be sure to sign each week in order to keep informed of both positive behaviors as well as infractions. This character card is aligned to the Character Always program that is being used district wide. Please feel free to fill out the communication sheet that follows this card.

Daily Reading Log This section contains a critical component of our fifth grade program. It will hold your child’s daily reading log. Your child will be expected to read each night for 30 minutes and fill out the log contained in this section. Your child may read library books, books from my classroom library, or books from home. Reading is the vehicle to take us places we may never get to see or visit. Please sign the log after they have completed their nightly reading. This will stay in the homework pocket found in the inside cover.

Reader’s Workshop This section contains any handouts, notes, or completed work students may need for reference.

Writer’s Workshop This section contains grammar sheets, idea pages, elements of writing, etc… This section is to aid in students’ writing they do at home. Please refer to these pages if you have any questions regarding expectations in writing.

Math This is where students will be keeping notes taken in class, example problems, and mathematical reference sheets. This will be a great resource for students during math homework.

Social Studies This area will hold a timeline where students will be able to chronicle important historical events. There will also be a United States map where students can practice memorizing their states and capitals. Students are also expected to keep notes, handouts, and projects in this area.

Science This section will be similar to social studies but include more projects, reference materials, and drawings. This will aid students when studying for tests and completing projects.
