Our day today
Aug 18th, 2009 by Mrs. Starbuck

Third we did book procedures and talked about how many books we can pick up. You have to write your name and the book name you are checking out on a piece of paper. Fourth we did specials. Some people have P.E., library, or technology. Fifth we did social studies and talked about the early explorers. Sixth we went to lunch and had really good food to eat.  Me and my friends talked and every one else in our class talked too. Seventh we went to recess.  Me and a lot of other people kicked soccer balls around, I kick them really high so do a lot of other people. Eight we did A.R and I went to the library and picked out two books. After all that we did math and our math homework. Last Mr. G, our counselor, and talked about responsibility.

Lock in today

Dear Parents and Students,

Good afternoon. I wanted to take this opportunity to inform you of an incident that occurred on our campus this morning. We had a medical emergency on our campus this morning involving one of our students. As a result, the student needed to be transported to the hospital via helicopter. As a precautionary measure and to protect and ensure the safety of all students, staff, and parents on our campus we went into a code lock-in while the helicopter landed, loaded, and departed with the student. During a code lock-in instruction continues without interruption. The most pronounced difference is that no students are out of the classroom at any time without adult supervision, and in this case, no students or adults were allowed outside of the buildings. This decision was made in an effort to minimize impact to students and to ensure their safety.

Student and staff safety is our number one priority here at Harmon Elementary School. If you have questions or concerns, as always, please feel free to contact me directly here at school. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you and your children.

Sincerely

Chris Lineberry

READ!!!
May 15th, 2009 by Mrs. Starbuck

Why can’t I skip my 20 minutes of reading tonight?

Let’s figure it out mathmatically:

Student A reads 20 minutes five nights of every week;
Student B reads only 4 minutes a night…or not at all!

Step 1: Multiply minutes a night x 5 times each week.
Student A reads 20 min. x 5 times a week = 100 mins./week
Student B reads 4 minutes x 5 times a week = 20 minutes

Step 2: Multiply minutes a week x 4 weeks each month.
Student A reads 400 minutes a month.
Student B reads 80 minutes a month.

Step 3: Multiply minutes a month x 9 months/school year
Student A reads 3600 min. in a school year.
Student B reads 720 min. in a school year.

Student A practices reading the equivalent of ten whole school days a year.
Student B gets the equivalent of only two school days of reading practice.

One would expect the gap of information retained will have widened considerably and so, undoubtedly, will school performance. How do you think student B will feel about him/herself as a student?

Some questions to ponder:

Which student would you expect to read better?

Which student would you expect to know more?

Which student would you expect to write better?

Which student would you expect to have a better vocabulary?

Which student would you expect to be more successful in school….and in life?

Which student are YOU?

STUDY TIPS!
Mar 24th, 2009 by Mrs. Starbuck

  • Re-read the pages in the textbook or the packet pages that the test is on. Sometimes there are questions at the end of the reading that you can answer which will help you to review the information.
  • Make flashcards. Put the key people, places, events and definitions on one side of the card then the definitions on the other side. Then, memorize the flashcards by reading them over and over. Once you think you have them memorized, you can ask mom, dad or even an older brother or sister to QUIZ you. If you have made flashcards, they can use them to quiz you.
  • Organize the information. If you are given a note packet or if you just have several pages of notes to study from, it may be helpful to re-write your notes so that all the important information is in categories. For example, go through your notes and copy down all the information about people, then on another piece of paper or on a note card copy down the information on events and so on.
  • Get a study buddy! Mom and dad have not been in 5th grade recently, which means they may not know a lot about what you have to study, so ask a fellow fifth grader to come over and review the information with you. Together you can re-read the information, look over your notes or even make flashcards.
